We want to talk about starting a folk school in Southside Birmingham.
A folk school is a School for Life: the students are all ages and the curriculum emerges from the problems, questions, and curiosities of their lives, context, and culture.
Folk schools have a long history of bridging social divides, creating community, and, occasionally, transforming the societies that host them.
In true folk school fashion, we don't pretend all the answers and instead want to bring together an interested group of people who will help decide on the structure, rules, and programming. We invite you to our house that we hope will serve as one of the sites for folk school programming.
The tentative plan is to start with a half hour of hanging out and getting to know one another, then an hour of work, then another half hour of hanging out. There will be food and refreshments courtesy of a microgrant we received from our friends at Connective Tissue.
The agenda for the "work" part will be simple: we'll present a plan to the group for the folk school, we'll ask for thoughts and feedback, and then ask if you want to sign up for a commitment, i.e. a thing you want to be responsible for and have decision-making power over.
This is a no commitment meeting where you can just learn more and see if it's the type of thing you're interested in. At minimum, we can promise a lot of other interesting people to meet.
