Whether it’s flipping through an old scrapbook with family, admiring artifacts in a museum alongside strangers, or listening to music reminiscent of childhood summer nights in a crowded room, reflecting on our past alongside others is powerful. Collective reflection creates wisdom and insight greater than the sum of individual memories. It allows us not only to remember, but to better understand who we are, what we value, and what is worth carrying forward. This past March at Iron Hills Folk School felt like that kind of reflection. Not in a distant or nostalgic way, but in a way that asked us to consider how do the stories, traditions, and skills we inherit from our elders inform the future we want to build together in Birmingham? In an era during which our lives are increasingly fragmented by age, industry, background, and routine, we are losing valuable intergenerational relationships. During the second installment of our Front Porch Talks series, Iron Hills created a space for this kind of connection. Our more senior members and friends of the folk school reflected on the communities they grew up in and shared experiences of their generation. When we disregard history or the life lessons of another generation, we undermine our present well-being and ability to create a more resilient city. By listening to and laughing about the stories of others’ pasts, we learned how we can be stewards of the places we inherit. Our St. Pat’s social transported us to another place and time as we turned the house into a lively pub. Corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, plenty of potatoes, and drinks were enjoyed to the hum of fiddles in the background. Stories of the Crichton leprechaun in Mobile were revisited as Alabama-born folks shared local lore with newcomers. We ended the month with a guided mindful walk at Ruffner Mountain inviting us to slow down and take stock of where we are.We practiced being aware of our breath, experimenting with different ways of walking, and processing our experience of nature with a group. Surrounded by acres of oak and pine on a reclaimed mining site, we were reminded that reflecting on where we’ve been in light of where we are going isn’t just about looking back at our collective past, but grounding ourselves in the present moment. The future of Birmingham is not something that will unfold passively; it is something we build. If we look deeply we can see that this future we seek is only made of non-future elements. It is shaped by the actions we take today: the stories we honor, the relationships we kindle, and the awareness we cultivate.
